"I had no idea David Davis would resign if I came for a meal in his constituency," said Lembit as he started his speech. "This Dinner arranged four months ago, is like throwing a boomerang into the political stratosphere and scoring a bulls eye four months later." Quips like this flowed effortlessly provoking roars of laughter as local councillors, activists and their guests enjoyed a virtuoso display from a Lembit on top form.

Lembit's performance rounded off an evening of inspirational speeches from a Lib Dem line up of Denis Healy, PPC for Hull North, David Nolan, PPC for Haltemprice & Howden, Carl Minns Leader of Hull City Council and Diana Wallis MEP for Yorkshire & Humberside. With the speeches fed into the spaces around and between courses the guests were treated to personal visits from the speakers as they tucked into the excellent fare provided by the Millhouse Restaurant at Skidby Mill.

Coinciding spectacularly with David Davis's resignation the Dinner gained extra fizz to its celebration of the Lib Dem victory in Hull in May's local elections. With a solid overall majority Hull's Liberal Democrats can now build on their proven record of making real improvements to the lives of everyone in the city.
