Nick Clegg received a very warm welcome from local activists of the Yorkshire and the Humber Region, as he arrived to answer any questions they wanted to ask him. Jeanette Sunderland, the regional chair opened the meeting with a review of the past year and urged everyone to prepare for very tough campaigning over the coming months.
The meeting at the Mint Hotel in Leeds on Wednesday 24th of August drew a packed audience which included Lord William Wallace and Baroness Angela Harris as well as MP David Ward from Bradford East and many senior liberal democrat activists.
In his opening speech Nick reminded everyone of what had been achieved by the party since the 2010 election, and of the fact that Liberal Democrats held important cabinet posts including Vince Cable, Chris Huhne and Steve Webb. These ministers had made enormous changes to the government of the country which will serve it well in the future. Although the referendum on the Alternative Vote had been lost a large percentage of the Lib Dem manifesto has made its way onto the statute book. He acknowledged that the rough handling both he and the party had received at the hands of the media on the students' fees issue had caused a great deal of damage to the party's image.
But there are now increasingly positive signs pointing to a brighter future with party membership growing and local council seats being won in by-elections.
After the meeting members were very pleased with Nick's report and the answers he gave to the questions put to him. Seasoned campaigners left the Mint Hotel with an extra spring in their step.
