Simon Hughes rouses the coalition conference
" We are still the party of civil liberties, we are still the party ready to negotiate the end of nuclear weapons and we are still the party 100% committed to full electoral reform," said Simon Hughes in a stirring speech to conference on May 16th.
The conference had been convened to discuss the Lib Dem Coalition with the Conservative Party. As speaker after speaker addressed the 2,000 delegates it was clear that forming a coalition was the only responsible way to deal with an election result which left no one party in overall control.
Simon said, "There will regularly be elections and by-elections to fight. They must be fought on our manifesto and not on the coalition agreement. We must never forget that the more Liberal Democrats are elected at every level, the more chance we have of our policies being the policies of local government and national government - for this term of office and the next."
