Nick Clegg MP, Deputy Prime Minister
On Sunday 16th of May Birmingham's NEC played host to an historic moment in our political history. A specially convened conference voted overwhelmingly to support the Lib Dem Conservative coalition agreement to form a government.
The conference was called by the party's president Baroness Scott to give the national party an opportunity to question the leadership about the coalition agreement. It was swiftly organised by the party's conference committee chaired by Duncan Brack. The 28 line motion debated in the four hour session, concluded with the statement that, 'Conference further believes that the coalition agreement represents the best chance to create a stable government that can address the serious economic challenges facing the country in a fair and sustainable manner.'
Nick Clegg told the conference, "I know the stakes are high - for me personally as well as the party. But I came into politics to change things and that means taking risks."
"Real, big change never comes easy. So it would be wrong for us to let this chance of real change pass us by. The chance to transform politics, the chance to hardwire fairness into our society, the chance to change Britain for good."
Lib Dem policies can now be put into effect and at the same time restrain extreme Conservative agendas like reducing inheritance tax for the very rich.
