Fred Smith Willerby Parish Councillor
"We warned a long time ago about the plans in County Hall to introduce car-parking charges in places like Willerby & Anlaby," says Fred Smith.
"It is absurd to treat Willerby Square Car Park like Beverley and Bridlington, which are much bigger shopping centres and attract tourists."
The Council is persisting with these charges, despite public outrage. Local businesses and residents campaigned vigorously against them. A Lib Dem petition in Willerby attracted three thousand signatures. Small businesses are struggling to survive at present. They need all the help they can get. But residents will be reluctant to go for their prescriptions, to pay the papers, have a coffee or their eyes tested etc. if they have to pay to park. The charges are an extra stealth tax on residents and small businesses alike.
County Hall recently took fright and postpones the charges - until after the local elections in 2011! This temporary delay is certainly not the long term victory local residents and businesses worked for!
Voting Lib Dem on May 6th is a way to make County Hall think again.

Full Council on April 7th voted to introduce the car parking charges in Willerby and Anlaby. The Liberal Democrats and some others voted against.
The Liberal Democrat amendment not to introduce them here and in certain other places was defeated.
The two Conservative councillors from Willerby and Kirk Ella did not vote to scrap the car parking charges.
The Council is still not listening to residents.
