Fred Smith Willerby Parish Councillor
A by-election has been called in the East Riding Council Ward of Willerby & Kirk Ella.
The by-election has been caused by the resignation of a Conservative councillor. It will take place on May 6th, the same day as the general election.
Elections in Willerby & Kirk Ella are usually a two horse race between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. The Labour candidate lives in Brough.
The Liberal Democrats have chosen campaigner Fred Smith as their candidate for the by-election. He is the only candidate who lives in the ward. Fred, a civil servant, has lived in Willerby for many years. He has been married to Elaine for over thirty years: they have two children and two grandchildren.
Fred is known to local residents as one of three Lib Dem councillors for Willerby & Kirk Ella on East Riding Council until 2007. A Parish Councillor for Willerby since 2003, he has an impeccable record for pursuing the interests of residents. It was Fred who promoted the bid, in 2005, to refurbish Willerby Square toilets. He campaigned to ensure that skips in roads were not a danger to pedestrians and motorists. He also worked hard to keep street signs and footpaths throughout Willerby and Kirk Ella up to scratch. Fred was a regular on Planning Committees. He helped to promote safety for children around schools on the main school routes. He also spoke out for residents on the Environment, Transport an Pensions.
Fred says: "I promise to residents up to date County County all matters such as the proposed car-parking charges."
