The Tory run East Riding Council has decided not to introduce its new car parking charges before the local elections in 2011. Instead the Car Parking Review Panel's recommendation of introducing new charges for parking in Cottingham and other small towns in 2012 was accepted at a full council meeting on April 7th.

Lib Dem councillors Katrin McClure and Phil Davison, who are members of the Car Parking Review Panel, have submitted a minority report challenging 14 of the Panel's 46 recommendations. "Charges will endanger the viability of local shops. They will be put out of business by out-of-town supermarkets with their free car parks," said Katrin & Phil. "The cost of maintaining Council owned car parks should be met through a special Council Tax on those communities where parking remains free."

"I am disgusted at the way Phil and I were deliberately excluded from the press conference organised by the Council to publicise the majority report. Cllr Brian Jeffries, leader of the Lib Dem group, has written an angry letter of complaint to the Chief Executive and I have been interviewed on Radio Humberside about the deeply felt objections to the charges," said Katrin.

The Minority Report is now available from within the Downloads section of this website.
