Alan Luckraft calls for equal treatment for tax & benefit cheats
Haltemprice & Howden Treasurer Alan Luckraft received the full backing of conference delegates for his motion calling for the equal treatment of tax dodgers & benefit cheats. His proposal was put to the packed Regional Conference of the Yorkshire & the Humber Liberal Democrats held on Saturday the 7th of November at the Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington, near York.
"The people who are caught cheating the benefit system are usually poor and can face gaol if they are caught, while tax dodgers, who are usually well off, are treated much more leniently," said Alan Luckraft in his presentation. "Here we have one soft law for the rich and another much harsher one for the poor for making false claims on the taxpayer."
Without specifying exactly how tax dodgers and benefit cheats should be more equally treated Alan called upon the authorities concerned to agree on a common approach.
Denis Healy, the next MP for Hull North, supported the motion, which was carried overwhelmingly by the conference.
