"I was horrified when I saw the fence on Bricknell Avenue suddenly appear," said Cllr McClure, whose feelings were strongly echoed by Cllr Knight. "We were not told about it before it went up," said Cllr Knight, "but let us hope these bushes will soon grow and allow the council to take it down. This fence is an eyesore and a poor advertisement for Cottingham."

To explain why the fence had been built a council officer said that it was to make drivers & riders stop at the end of Bricknell Avenue. Several accidents had happened at the Cottingham Rd - Bricknell Avenue junction because some drivers leaving Bricknell Avenue without stopping had not seen all the traffic on Cottingham Rd. By forcing all drivers to stop so they can see traffic approaching from the right it is hoped that there will be no more accidents. Acknowledging that the fence was not a welcome sight he said that once the beech tree hedges had grown, the fence would be removed.
