Nick Clegg at the 2008 Spring Conference in Liverpool
"The great political story of our time is the story of the vast and growing army of people who look at the two main parties and say,'No thanks,' " is how Nick Clegg opened his first conference speech as leader. He drew rapturous applause.
"But this isn't a story of indifference. Despite being tired of the same old politics people do care. They just don't care about politicians. If we want a political system that works for the future, we need to start again," continued Nick.
As well as reforming the voting system Nick called for three big changes.
"First, let's clean up politics. Scandals over pay and expenses have shattered confidence. Second, let's give people the say they deserve, let the people have a direct say in how their health service should be run and third, let's design a new political system for the 21st century."
