Setting the autumn conference alight for the Yorkshire & Humber region, Sheffield MP & Home Affairs spokesman, Nick Clegg and Eastleigh MP & Environment spokesman Chris Huhne went head to head at one of the party's leadership Hustings.
The debate took place at the Leeds Civic Town Hall on November 3rd during the Yorkshire & Humber Regional autumn conference.
In measured authoritative tones Chris laid out the themes he wants to see at the top of the political agenda; more actual equality, the abolition of Trident & more support for our troops, to save the planet's future with a Liberal revolution and cooperating with our partners in Europe, to give local people more power over their own public services & to have fair votes leading a programme of constitutional reform.
In an impassioned speech Nick emphasised the unprecedented nature of the challenges we all face and the need for a radical and Liberal approach towards solving them. Under his leadership he promised more support to councillors and activists to win more seats. He declared his desire for everyone to have more say in their lives at the local level, for social justice, for greater opportunity and liberty. He also proposed doubling the teacher support for the weakest children to ensure full literacy by the end of their primary school. Most of all he declared his desire to reach out beyond the party, to those who share our liberal values and bring them in to it.
The result of the contest will be declared on December 17th 2007.
